Maybe the Chieftain of St Andrew’s was reading some of Lee Travino’s memoirs and was a bit afraid of disturbing the local community. Too bad for the Scots. Too bad for all who really enjoy the sound of the pipes.
A great win for St Patrick’s in getting the trophy back, without the likes of Des Kimmet, Gerry Wright, & Roy Bulfin, to prod us on. A hearty Congratulations to our grand convenor, Jack Egan. Jack not only encouraged all of us to play hard and fair, but then took the bull by the horns, and along with Donal Dixon, won the very first match of the day. Well done Jack. Our quest for the trophy started out with Jack and Donal in the first group winning 2 up, and finishing in the last group with Frank & Joy winning 3 & 2.
Sandwiched between were other winners Nikki Cox and Simon Harbon, 2 up, Frank Bremmer & Gerry Healy 3 & 2, Fred and Jubjang May 2 & 1, and draws by Padraic Ellicot and David Jeffers, Mike Shannon and Barry Shea, and Vincent Smyth and Martin Smith. Ying and Bob won with the biggest spread of 6 & 5…Ying must have been pretty tired carrying Bob all that way. Michael and Tum Bain sacrificed their match to avoid a whitewash and to encourage the Scots to come back next year.
Note to all that every one of the mixed pairs were winners. (Except for Padraic and David – A real mixed pair)
The most notable shot of the day was Nikki Cox’s HOLE IN ONE on the 3rd hole. A very nice touch in placing the near pin flag on the top of the flagstick. Well done Nikki !
There was quite a bit of confusion prior to the start in Jack trying to explain to Alan McAlister that it was not necessary to concede a gimme putt. You’ll work it out one day Alan…keep at it.
Many thanks to Barry Shea and Barry Osbourne of Bistro 33 for all the great food and drink he provided. Also thanks to Mike Moir of FENIX and the rest of the sponsors. It cannot be done without the great support of all of you.
I guess there is one more “mixed pair” that duly needs to be recognized. One of the greatest pairing of all golf in Thailand must be Sally & Edith. As they say “that pair would beat a full house”. Well done ladies. How could anyone expect the Irish to get through 2 or 3 holes without a little libation.
Both teams retired to the Cross Bar pub, the Scots club house, at the end of the game for some apres golf food and drink and condolences and the anecdotes of what could have been had the ball not …… A great buffet was on hand and the noise level from the Irish camp celebrating the win was almost too rowdy for the non partisan pub customers. Nicky was honoured for her Hole-in-One and was presented with the bill for the on-house drinks for her effort. Duncan Niven, the Scots convenor, handed over the Celtic Cup to Jack with a vow to regain it next year. Jack greatly accepted the trophy on behalf of the team commenting that although it was all in fun, it felt so much better to be on the winning team this year.
