BNH “Let’s Knit” project update
Over the last month (or so) ‘Knitting Fever’ has become pandemic in Bangkok. Many people, including ambassadors and CEO’s of companies, have already knitted squares for the BNH “Let’s Knit for the Needy” appeal and we are confident that we shall reach our target of having enough squares to make at least 111 blankets. As you will see below, the British Ambassador has joined in too and is happy that we use his picture to help get more people interested in the project which is great. The staff at BNH Hospital are so enthusiastic too – from directors, doctors and nurses, to orderlies and maids – whenever they have a spare minute the needles come out and everyone has pledged to complete at least 5 squares.
The Press Conference on Tuesday, 15th September, starting at 2.00 pm, in Central Court, CentralWorld will help promote the project to a wider audience through the media and the life-size knitted Gingerbread House which we have transported from England and its creator, Alison Murray, will raise the profile of the project even higher and encourage more and more people to get knitting. Please contact Khun Jutharat on 02 686 2700 Ext. 3375 for an invitation.
The knitted Gingerbread House will be on show at CentralWorld until the 20th September and then it will move to be on display at BNH Hospital until the 30th September. Workshops, with knitting kits at reasonable prices and instructors for anyone who wants to learn how to knit, will be located next to the Gingerbread House.
If you are interested in knitting – squares should be 15 cm x 15 cm – any colour, any style and can be dropped off at BNH or posted to us Community Relations Centre, BNH Hospital, 9/1 Convent Road, Sathorn, Bangkok 10500, Thailand. The deadline has been extended to the end of October but please send completed squares as soon as possible to enable Sister Louise’s girls and ladies at the Sisters of the Good Shepherd, Fatima Centre, to start sewing them into blankets. The target is to make at least 111 blankets to celebrate BNH Hospital’s 111th anniversary – we believe we shall be able to make more than this thanks to all the interest and support the project is receiving.
The knitted blankets will be handed over to the children at Umphangwitthayakom School, in Tak province in November 2009. (The press conference will include a short film about the school. Many of the children studying there also live at the school as their homes are in remote mountain villages which take 2 – 3 days to walk to).
